Scientific research has identified an increasing number of alterations at the gene and protein level in breast cancers that can serve as a target for therapy. Several new drugs have been recently approved that are directed to these targets, with many other agents under study. It is increasingly clear that a better understanding of a patient’s and a cancer’s unique genetics and genomics can offer new possibilities for individualized treatment of metastatic breast cancer. This talk will review emerging areas in the treatment of breast cancer and exciting areas of ongoing research.
